Thauberger's early paintings were based on the repetition of a single image or motif, perhaps of a bird or animal in a loose grid pattern over the whole surface of of the work. The repeated image, produced with a fairly detailed template, was sharply defined and arranged to stand, much like a screen, in front of a schematic landscape.
